Is this strictly user-to-user or is it monitored and supported by Microsoft
personnel?

I'm very new to Windows 2000 Pro after too many years using Win98.

Just wondering if these are 'normal' win2k behaviors:

After every software load, when the system restarts I will get a blue screen
with white text displaying some message, but the display is so brief I can't
read the complete message, but I do seem to see "memory dump" in there a
lot.
The system automatically reboots and then everything opens fine.

Sometimes this blue screen 'stick's and the system does NOT automatically
reboot.
I see "Unable to load device driver ...\system32\drivers\usbd.sys
0XC0000221.

On most occasions, the only thing I have connected to the USB port is a
Microsoft Optical Mouse which was recognized by Plug-and-Play and I never
installed from the CD as I did in
Win98.

Sometimes I will have the mouse and a portable hard drive attached to the
USB port. The manufacturer claims that this device does not require any
additional device driver installation under Win2K (it did in Win98 and I
installed from their CD).

Are the automatic reboot blue screens just part of how Win2K is supposed to
work?

The blue screens (BSOD Blue Screen Of Death)are not normal
and indicate that you are having problems. It is probably
realted to the USB driver for either your muse or hard
drive. Try installiug the mouse drivers from the CD and
see it that helps.

You may wish to open a support incident with Microsoft to analyze your
memory dump. Or post the bugcheck code (blue screen code) like you've done.

The Cause of your Bugcheck 0xC0000221
This bug check results from a serious error in a driver or other system
file. The file header checksum does not match the expected checksum.

This can also be caused by faulty hardware in the I/O path to the file (a
disk error, faulty RAM, or a corrupted page file).

Replace the file manually would be a good first step.

Checking the system log in event viewer may yield additional error messages
that might help pinpoint your problem. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS
might also resolve this problem.

Thanks for the information, Daniel.
Another odd thing I've encountered, is that since upgrade to SP3, I'm having
an anomaly with default browser setting.
I've used the Preference setting in Mozilla 1.5 to set that browser as
default and it does function as default in all instances EXCEPT in Outlook
Express newsreader. A URL in a news group post will open in IE, not Mozilla.
A URL in Outlook 2000 will open in Mozilla.

I've also used the Set Program Access and Defaults to Mozilla, but the
setting there doesn't seem to "stick." By that I mean I click the Mozilla
radio button and I get a progress dialogue saying that Mozilla is being set
as default browser. Then, when I look at the list again, the Use My Current
Browser is checked.

I've also used the file type manager to associate all HTML related documents
to open with Mozilla, but I still get this anomaly in OE no matter if I open
the application via View>news from Outlook or open OE by itself, alone.

I have not personally experienced issues like that (probably because I'm
sticking to mostly MS products on my Windows machines ... no comments please
....)

Perhaps posting in microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
might yield better results.

I did. Thanks. Just thought I'd ask while I 'had-your-attention.'
