Have you ever changed the priority of a process in the Task Manager?
Do you have to do it often?
Do you want your database server or media player to know the priority it
should work with?

Prio - Process Priority Saver. Free for personal use.

This compact program allows you to save the priority you specify for any
process.

How to use -

a.. Start the Task Manager.

a.. Right-click a process and select Set Priority.

a.. Set the priority you want for the process.

I installed this small device a few weeks ago and it certainly
provides several useful features as you describe.

fwiw:
It probably isn't spyware but it does install a couple of modules
at start-up: prio.sys and prio.dll (see Autoruns tabs 'drivers' and
'applinit' respectively). Prio.dll then appears in my ZA firewall
module list for external comms but maybe that's because it needs
to, to provide the data in the TCP/IP tab it creates.

Hello, yes indeed those 2 files are needed. The dll file runs with windows
explorer and adds the fuctionality to the the task manager and the .sys file
is the (optional since it asks you if you want to install it) driver
for the network info. Indeed it has to communicate with the network to get
the port info.

Im just wondering how did you get the detailed information about what was
added at the startup?
So you use a program for this?

Thanks

I must have skipped over the install option for the .sys file.
I'll take another peep under the covers...

Exactly. I use the indispensable sysinternals 'Autoruns' utility v8.51
which has tabs which list every exe/sys/dll that starts when the
system is booted. Anything which looks dodgy can be temporarily
switched off or even removed. Also right-click to search Google
for info on any item.

yes:) I know this utility and have used it for a long time..

I was just wondering if you had a program that poped up a warning or
something like that
when something was added...

I thought you probably already used it, being a bright spark :)

I was just trawling through the lists the other day....

Take a look also to Process Master (a similar software)
http://www.octopod.org/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=77&Itemid=136

I also like very much Process Tamer:
http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/proctamer/index.html
when a process use a % of CPU > a certain limit for at least x seconds,
it lowers temporarily its priority automatically (exceptions can be
specified).
I find it very useful for some programs which sometime hang using CPU at
100%, slowing down (nearly freezing) the system (including the task
manager to kill it!).

Its licence is particular (I don't know how much it could be OT here):
(from the site ) "This program is FREEWARE, and can be used forever,
without restriction. However, in order to encourage people to visit
DonationCoder.com at least once, we require that you visit our site in
order to download a Freeware or Full Member license key."

it's NOT a sig because there is no sig-delimiter. And, as usual: please
don't fullquote everytime. THX.

Try also the option "Boost foreground process to high priority": system
seems to have a better response (a background process that takes 1-2
seconds more, usually isn't noticeable, but it is for the foreground
process)

Would Process Tamer stop my PC from running at 100% processor usage when
doing DVD recoding etc (which results in it crashing after about 5
minutes, probably because of overheating)?

I don't think: it simply reduces the priority of the software that use
much CPU.
If no others software needs CPU, the first software will have the 100%.

If overheating is your problem (mine too, due to a sometime faulty fan),
take a look at http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php : it shows the
temperatures of the system, with programmable events to show alert
messages or to shut-down the system when temperatures become too high.

That's a pity. I was hoping for a miracle cure!
OK on the fan. I still have to do a physical check to see that it is
working (although I have not reason to believe it isn't).
Cheers,
Ian.
