ThinkPad T40 hangs going into suspend

Windows 2000 on a T40. The hibernate works fine, but
standby blanks the screen and hangs. The hard disk
continues to run, the power light stays on, the CD-ROM
light stays on, the "standby moon icon" does not light,
and the cisco wireless card turns off.

The system has latest BIOS applied, and is running SP4.

The only recourse is to hold the power key down 10 seconds
to force a reset.

No one at work knows what is causing this. Any ideas are
welcome.
