WHen i boot up my computer i get the error, "there was a
recent software or hardware change might have caused it and
a list of options i choose such as Safemode, safemode
networking, normal start up, and a few others. If i choose
any of these, it goes back to the same menu. What do i
have to do? If i have to reinstall windows xp, adn i cant
back up any files, will i lose my files by reinstalling
windows? THANK YOU!

You need to perform a repair install. Your data should be safe.
