There is no icon for me to select at start up

I'm running Windows XP Professional (2002) on a Gateway Solo 1450 laptop
computer.
When the Windows start page states - " to begin, click your user name"
there is no icon to select. (There was one initially but I'm afraid I
screwed something up)
I've tried the ctr+alt+del to get to the "Administrator" user name, but the
original password was deleted. I've also tried the "owner" user name but that
failed also.

What's more, I've tried numerous things, ie. safe mode etc.,with the F8
option upon reboot, still no luck.
Neither the Gateway "Applications & Driver" or Microsoft Version 2002 CD's
worked.

Can anyone help?

The default password for "Administrator" is blank. Did you try pressing
"Enter" on the blank password entry box?

I've also tried the "owner" user name but that

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer for this. Restoring your
computer from a recent backup image will be the simplest way to recover from
this. Of course, if you HAD a good backup, you wouldn't be here asking for a
solution.

Put your drive into a USB enclosure and copy your data off to another
computer before attempting the following:

Use the instrictions here to restore the registry hives:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

This may enable you to log on to Windows. If you can get to a desktop, do a
System Restore to a time before this happened.

If this doesn't help, it might be time to break out those reinstallation
disks.

1. What do you mean that "the original password was deleted" for the
Administrator account? Do you mean the password was changed and you
don't remember it? "Deleted" doesn't make sense in this context.

2. What - exactly - did you do with the Gateway Applications & Driver CD?

3. What is the full name printed on the other CD, and what - exactly -
did you do with it?

4. Is "owner" the account that you usually use? Is it a limited account
or an administrator account?

You can try to reset the password for Administrator account using the
directions here:
http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
but as Mark Adams says, it may be time to save your data and do a clean
install (assuming that 2nd CD you have really is an XP install CD).
