No log in names to select

I run sp2.
This morning when I switched it on, it now goes to the blue log in screen,
stating "to begin click your name" but with no name to click!
I have tried safe mode, last known working config but nothing comes up on
the log in screen - no options to select.
On Ctrl+alt+delete I can get a log on box with a name but it doesn't
remember a password for my name (I don't remeber setting one anyway) but I
have never gone through the log in screen anyway - it usually just comes
straight up to the start menu.
Any advice please? HELP!

Hi

Have you tried a System Restore via Safe Mode?

Oops - should have added - try leaving the password blank, if you are using
XP Home Edition.

If I hit F8 and get the safe mode option, when it boots up I still get a blue
screen with "to begin click user name" with no user name to click
Should I hit f1 on booting to get system restore? I can't remember
Thanks by the way for replying

For some unknown reason, it thinks I have a password for administrator. I
haven't. I checked on the start screen security (hitting <del> at start up)
and there is no password set (unless this is another password).

I can't log on as an administrator as the password won't work. So when I try
to repair, it asks me for the admin password (which I haven't set - you get
my frustration here!!)
I am trying currently to find the password using
http://www.loginrecovery.com/instructions.html#cd (thanks for that link)

but the darned pc won't accept the ISO image to try and get the password. I
have no idea why.

Do you suggest a parallel load? or is there any hope?
Sorry to bother you with this
TIA
Kate
Thanks in advance
Kate

Hi

A 'Repair' installation doesn't ask for a password. So I'm not sure what
you are trying to do. Have you contacted your PC supplier to see if they
can help?

Try selecting the option to boot from "the last known good
configuration".

Will,
Thanks for the response. I can assure you that the repair installation
(having booted from the os disc) DID ask for an administrator password. I
don't know why.
I am just plucking up the courage to double install and try and recover the
documents that way. I am resigned to having to redo everything.
THanks for the help
Kate

Hi Kate

I can assure you that a 'Repair' install doesn't ask a password. Have
another look at Michael's article. Are you trying to go into the Recovery
Console? If so, you need to bypass that.

I gave up! Nothing was doing.

I double installed and, having got my data, reformatted the HD and started
again.
Most stuff is OK but I can't upload my outlook address book for love nor
money!

But thanks everyone for the help

Do you guys think this could be a virus?
