The stupid paperclip

Lovely, I'll remember that trick! Have not messed with the menus much at
all, in all my customizing efforts thus far, so never noticed that behavior.

Thanks,

Why not try it out first and whine about it after, if needed?
It's not like anyone here is try to force the Assistant upon
you or has any power to affect the design.

It's there and the assistant still comes up.

No, you still have to turn the assistant off somehow, putting Help on the
toolbar just saves you the three clicks that Mark was saying were the
alternative to hitting F1 (that's all I was responding to).

In my experience, turning off the assistant means turning
off help and you have to reactivate the assistant to get any
help!
But in fact, (being nitpicky here :) I just realized what I (she) meant was
adding the little picture with a ? on it to the toolbar, not the actual menu
item, which would be Tools | Customize, Commands tab, select Window and Help
in left column, find Help icon, drag it to toolbar. Or just drag it off the
Standard Toolbar. As I suggested before, sf, I really think playing around
in the Tools | Customize dialog would lead you to a lot of things you would
find useful, and it's simpler than writing macros.

My usual mode of operation is to Customize as soon as I sit
down at a new computer, because I MUST have certain things
at my fingertips (and I don't use F keys).

The "?" is a custom button... which Help were you suggesting
if that isn't the one? "?" seems to be the best choice for
me. Unfortunately, it's been on my toolbar practically
forever and the "kitten" (less annoying than Clippy or
Einstein) comes up every time I toggle it. Turning off the
animated feature just turns off Help in my experience, so I
have to reactivate the animation if I want Help.

It's not a big deal, but it's still an annoying feature.
Have they come up with any way to eliminate it in XP? I
have a dog doing the searchs on that computer and Einstein
in Help.

It would be nice if TweakUI addressed this annoyance.

Have you followed the instructions in
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/TameAssistant.htm ? This gets
rid of the Office Assistant but *does not* disable Help. That article does
not address Word 2002, but I can assure you that I have all Help (available
through the Answer Wizard, the F1 key, and the ? button) and no sign of any
Office Assistant. This must be easy to accomplish since I don't remember
what I did to accomplish it. According to Word's Help, however, this is how
you do it:

1. In the Assistant balloon, click Options.
If the Office Assistant balloon isn't visible, click the Assistant.

2. On the Options tab, clear the Use the Office Assistant check box.
Note To turn on the Assistant at any time, click Show the Office Assistant
on the Help menu.

Tip

You can remove the Assistant permanently by reinstalling Microsoft
Office and choosing not to install the office Assistant.

I just wondered, since I referred you to that article on September 23, many
many messages back in this thread.

I go off on tangents. I'm surprised you can do all you do
in these newsgroups and work too! I can't seem to balance
the two. After working 10 - 12 hour days, my brain is
usually fried. That was a good example of what I forget to
do.

I think this is right (well, worked for me....) - if you go to
Programs/MSOffice etc... and look for a directory called "Actors", then just
delete the whole thing. Viola - no more paper clip.

Renaming is probably preferable in case you later decide you want to
reenable the Office Assistant.

And if you ever have to run Office Detect and Repair, I expect it will
reinstall the folder!
