"The server could not complete your request"

Since installing the "Office 2003 Service Pack 1" today I've been getting a
dialog box saying "The server could not complete your request..." whenever I
click on the name of one of my Webs in the "Getting started" panel. The
"Details" button on the dialog leading to a display of the "message that the
server returned" is blank.

When I open a Web using the File | Open ... commands everything works fine
and the Web is published properly.

Is this a glitch that others are seeing as a result of "Office 2003 Service
Pack 1" or do I need to start interrogating the tech support people at my
ISP and web hosting company to see if they were told of changes that would
give me this problem? Any good workarounds?

In Windows Explorer:

o Find and delete all FP Temp Files. By default,
these reside in C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\FrontPageTempDir

o Find and delete all hidden *.web files.

o Find and delete the cmdui.prf file.

Can not replicate the problem (Office 2003 Service Pack 1 on Win XP Pro SP1)
- the task pane usually shows the same last sites as File Recent Sites

I don't see a FrontPageTempDir in the indicated location or find one by
searching. I don't see a cmdui.prf file.

These are hidden files and folders. To see them in Windows Explorer:

1. Open any Windows Explorer window.
2. Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu.
3. Select the View tab.
4. Select Display The Contents Of System Folders.
5. Under Hidden Files And Folders, select Show Hidden Files And
Folders.
6. Click Apply To All Folders.

When you use the Windows XP Search window, you have to click the More
Advanced Options button and select:
Search System Folders
Search Hidden Files And Fiolders
Search Subfolders

In my case, I found cmdui.prf files at:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application
Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State

where <user> is my logon ID, and at:

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application
Data\Microsoft\Mse\1033

These are hidden files and folders. To see them in Windows Explorer:

I had all these settings exactly as indicated, but strangely, after
verifying this I was then able to find two CmdUI.PRF files, one where you
indicated and another in my Visual Studio folder (the search history
contained the file name, correctly spelled and the file in my Visual Studio
folder was timestamped on the day the problem began, at a time before this
thread began). I did not find a FrontPageTempDir folder, but did find a
WER1425.tmp.dir00 folder in the same location with various FrontPage
references inside.

However, moving the 2 CmdUI.PRF files, 5 *.web files and the
WER1425.tmp.dir00 folder to a folder on my desktop did not fix the problem
(and did not remove FrontPage's knowledge of my three webs either).

No word of the same problem from others in microsoft.public.officeupdate but
there are many threads about other problems with this week's update.

Could also be corruption of your network places (for server based webs, web folders , or registry entries for recent sites)

Try deleting the network place for those web if they are server based
- you will have to renter the location in File Open Site

Check your registry (backup & use precautions whenever editing the registry) for discrepancies in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage Explorer\Recent File List
HKEY_USERS\<YOUR USER CID>\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage Explorer\Recent File List

If you delete the listed web entries in both, FP should not offer any Recent Webs until you have opened and closed some using File
Open Site and repair the registry
