The red shield of no automatic update set

Is there any reasonable way to get rid of the red shield in the systray that
denotes that automatic updates are turned off and therefore I am a bad
person?

Control Panel>Security Center>on the left, click on "Change how Security
Center alerts me" to set desired state.

I can't do anything about whether you are a bad person or not. ;-)

You can get rid of it, but that doesn't mean you're still not bad.
