The Page Cannot Be Found

J

Julius

I have IE6.0 sp2 & Windows XP Professional

The search engine for IE doesn't work and everytime I
enter a search phrase I get the above noted error
message. If I type in a search engine address, ie.
google.com I get either a "The page cannot be displayed"
or a "404 Error Page not Found" message but if enter
googles IP address http://216.239.37.99/ I get the page
and the search works. It seems like I need to enter the
IP address to get a search to work; if I go to home page
for a search engine and try it I get, "The Page Cannot Be
Found" error. The only exception to this that I've found
so far is if I enter wisenut.com and do a search, it
works; I don't need the numbered IP address.
Any thoughts? Thank you very much!

Hi Julius :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Unable to search from IE6 Address Bar

Check the Registry to see if this file is there. Sometime during removal of
hijackers or spyware files in the Registry can get corrupted or removed as
well. If not, try adding this line to this part of the registry.

(watch for the wrap, it should be all on one line)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]

A Single Letter May Be Displayed in the Title Bar
When you run Windows Explorer or start Internet Explorer, the text in the
title bar may be displayed as a single letter (for example, an "M" or an
"E").

Go to "Start" -> "Run" -> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Check for a HOSTS file at [C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts] It might be
a hidden file. Open it with notepad. If there are any entries referencing
the common search engines, edit them out and save the file. There's a good
explanation of the HOSTS file at http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

Then, check for malware. Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware,
Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

The "Set IE Search to Default" file at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 229 might help after
removing malware.

Hope this helps,
Don
