I am trying to toubleshoot mother-in-law's computer. She connects to the
ISP, gets e-mail but none of her favorite web pages load. Nor do any typed
URL addresses into the Address box load. I have cleared temp web page
folder, history folder, cookies folder and cash folder. I have reset the
deaults in the security tab and still can't load any web pages. She is
running IE-6 SP-1 with Windows 98-SE.
I'd apprciate some help, thanks.

Hi,
This is probably being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)

You might try LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm before removing
malware. But, you will probably have to remove malware first, then LSPFix
may or may not be necessary to repair your Winsock files.

From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That may allow IE to work.
You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.

You might also be able to browse and download programs from the address bar
of Windows Explorer.

Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:

More security tips at http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,
Tried unchecking "Enable third party browser extensions", rebooted and then
logged in thru her ISP , both Favorites and typed web addresses did not work.
Open to any other suggestions. Thanks

I'll bet that this machine is full of spyware, parasites, etc.

Can you download LSPFix, CWShredder, Ad-aware & Spybot from another machine
and put them on a CD, Zip disk or USB Flash Drive?

LSPFix and CWShredder are both under 200KB and would fit on a floppy disk.
That may be enough to get you started.

I will downloand them from my machine. She lives an hour away so it could be
a day or two before I can run these files, thanks.
I will report back on status.

Finally a followup: Tried the LSPfix, no errors. CWShredder would not work,
it would not run. Could not get Spybot onto a Flash drive that would work on
the laptop so I could not run it. the laptop needed a downloaded driver to
read Flash, (which cames first the chicken or the egg), so I finally gave up.
Mother-in-law met a compuer wiz at a Farm Bureau convention that took the
laptop and spent hours correcting the problem. Seems the last ISP she had
before she went with an new ISP hookup with Farm Bureau, left some files in
the harddrive that kept her from logging onto the internet. This is a pretty
poor description of what went wrong but I was not able to talk to the
computer person before he left town and this is my mother-in-laws
"description" Thanks for your help.
