"the page cannot be displayed"

john

Please help. . . New laptop-compaq 2195us running XP with
IE 6.0 wireless through a router hard wired to my
desktop. After setting up the router, etc. internet
worked great. Given that it is a new computer,
downloaded all recommended updates at Microsoft site.
After download, IE would not work-displayed above message
(subject line of email). After 4hours on phone with
Netgear (router customer service) and Compaq customer
service, conclusion was, wireless connection was fine, it
was IE problem. I could ping any site and get a good
reply. After doing a "system restore" to original
factory settings, everything now works fine. I want to
download security updates but I don't know what to
do. . . There are a couple updates pertaining to IE-
possibly I should exclude them, but MS says they
are "critical" Please help. Thanks. If it would be
better to use direct email, please reply and I will.
