"The handle is invalid" error message when starting Defender

I installed Defender Beta 2 (after uninstalling Antispyware Beta 1 using
Add/Remove Programs) and it was running fine. However, after I restarted my
machine, I'm now getting an "Application failed to initialize: 0x80070006.
The handle is invalid." error message on startup and when I manually try to
launch Defender, and Defender doesn't run.

Anyone know what's causing this error, or how to fix it? Thanks.

Hi,

Could you verify the WinDefend service is running happily? Net start
windefend from the command line should say it's already running. What
platform and language are you on?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

(Sorry, I just saw your reply on the web-based interface; I guess the
"Notify me of replies" option in the Reply window didn't work.)

I already did a reinstall, and it works now. The WinDefend service is
running. After the reinstall I had a problem with the app not finding any
updated definitions for 20 days, but an uninstall of the AS_Sigs.MSI file
fixed it.

As for your last question, I am running on an English XP Pro SP2 laptop.

Thanks,
Jeff

Joe posts via NNTP. There's a process to synch the NNTP and the HTML
forums, and sometimes it is not very speedy. Once the HTML forum sees the
post, it should do the notifying--that's been reliable for me when I have
used it.
