Text wrapping markers?

Steve Hawkins

I often like to keep a hard copy of some of these newsgroup threads, and
threads from similar groups. In order to save paper I like to paste them
into Word and remove the text wrapping.

In most cases I notice that the text is wrapped by using 'manual line break'
marks ('shift' 'enter'). If there are also proper paragraph marks, I can
then simply auto replace all the 'manual breaks' with a space, and all is
well.

Unfortunately, quite a lot of mail I get seems to break the lines with
paragraph marks ('enter') so I have to delete them all and reformat the
whole solid block of text if I want to make it fit the page in Word.

Curiously, even if I use MessageCleaner to visually tidy texts while it is
in the MC window, when I paste it back into Word it has para marks at the
end of every line!?

Is there no convention about what marks are used for text wrapping?
Do many people actually rigorously put 'returns' in as if they were using a
typewriter?

Not really a serious problem but I would be interested to know more about
how this text wrapping works, and if the methods can be adjusted.

Actually, there are many conventions regarding line breaking, whihc is the
root of your problem. Some people do enter returns themselves, but
probably most do not. I'm not entering any as I type this message, but
I'm reasonably certain that you'll find one at the end of each line, put
there by the editor or news program. I believe that OE supplies hard
breaks when you transmit in plain text, the recommended format for
newsgroups. Your best bet is probably to create a macro in Word that
reformats paragraphs to your liking.

Hi Steve,
No realy an IE question...
FYI there are many encodeings for new lines and line breaks.. It depends on
the editor used to create the document.
eg. HTML = <br>
c++ = /n
Word = chr(10) + chr(13)

Very interesting thanks Rob,

I assume this is the reason that if I paste HTML into Word as Rich text it
puts a 'manual break' mark at the end of each line. But why if I paste as
'unformatted' text does it swap the manual break marks for 'para marks'
rather than no marks?

(I've now posed a similar question in the Word forum so you might like to
make any further comments there.)
