Although I've set it up in control panel using text to speech properties tab
in the speeck icon in control panel. And, I can hear to voice sample, I
cannot even locate the icon for text-to-speech in Word. Any suggestions

Word doesn't have built-in text-to-speech capability, but you can
arrange to use Excel's capability in Word. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287120&sd=tech
for the necessary macro.

If you put the macro into Normal.dot or another global template, you
don't have to worry about the security settings discussed at the end
of the article.

What it doesn't discuss is that, once you've set up the macro, you can
create a toolbar button to run it. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToToolbar.htm
for instructions.
