Terminal Server 4.0 license can use on Win2k TS?

Hi there,

Recently we have upgraded our windows NT Terminal Server
to Win2000 Terminal Server. To my surprise, the version of
TS on Win2000 requires CAL license as oppose to WinNT
terminal Server 4.0 where we only bought a single license
for the software.

Does anyone know is there a way i could upgrade Terminal
Server 4.0 license to Win2k TS CAL license? My client are
all connecting to my server with temp license now.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
Terence

As I'm sure you've heard, with the release of Software Assurance, license upgrades no longer exist, unless referring to shrinkwrapped box consumer products (meaning you'll have to purchase new TSCALs)

If your client computers are Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 they will receive a free license from the built-in pool of your Terminal Services Licensing Service (which you MUST have regardless of whether all of your clients are 2000+ or not)

You can purchase Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services CALs from any VAR, i.e. CDW, Softchoice, Insight, Provantage.... The reason I say "Windows Server 2003" is you'd be throwing your money away to purchase any 2000 TSCALs, should you decide to move to 2003 in the future.

If all of your clients are thin-client terminals, Win9x, Linux... then I'd suggest deciding to go with Windows Server 2003, as the feature set of 2003's Terminal Server is superior to 2000's in many, many ways. The only drawback is the need for TSCALs for 2000 & XP Pro clients

Just a comment, in addition to Patricks information: NT 4.0 also
required TS CALs for non-NT4 desktops. The only difference is that
they were not *enforced*. But if you didn't buy NT 4.0 TS CALs, you
were definitively violating the EULA.
