Hi, Haroldma.
I think either the Symantec tech didn't understand the question or you
misunderstood the answer.
I no longer run any Norton products except Norton Internet Security 2005,
because all the other fluff and eye candy (WinDoctor, etc.) seemed to be
spending all their time "fixing" "problems" that didn't seem to exist until
Norton went looking for them. In earlier Windows (pre-Win2K), the Norton
products were a lot of help, but in WinXP, I don't need them. Except for
Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall, which are in NIS.
The User's Guide for NIS 2005 says (on Page 5) just what Philo told you:
"If you're using Windows XP...turn off the Windows firewall before
installing" NIS. Nothing about removing the Windows firewall. In fact, I
don't think there is a way to remove it.
In my system (WinXP SP2, plus NIS 2005), I just went to the Windows Security
Center and told it I'd be using NPF. Now, the Security Center says a
firewall is ON (Green). Clicking the little down-chevrons expands this to
tell me, "Norton Internet Security is currently ON..." It just wants me to
be sure that I have SOME firewall working.
