temp file

I like to keep my temporary folders clean and clear them
regularly, lately there's 1 file I can't seem to delete
and of which 1 is added on each reboot. It's in local
settings\temp and looks like this ~df????.tmp (the ?'s
are single character wildcards). Could somebody tell me
what these are, or how I can find out which program is
maintaining a lock on this file?

It just says:

Kind of file: temporary file
Opens with: Unknown application

That's besides the regular file attributes, nothing else.

Hi

Try and rename the file from a command prompt, then delete it. I'm not sure why the file is being re-created. Can you please email me a copy of the file?

Yes I found out the same thing at work this afternoon, though there the file
is deleted when word is stopped and the funny thing is that Word is not in
my Windows startup at home, though it's installed on my System. I guess some
component that is invoked at startup must be causing this.. weird.. The file
is being created even though Word is not run, must be some office component.
Is there a decent utility that will allow me to view file locks on XP.

Kees Spierings

If ~dft????.tmp, it is created by Word.

You can use OH from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en

Type
oh +otl
reboot
then
oh /t file <filename>
or leave filename blank to see all.

EG to see what program has inbox.dbx open (OE's inbox file)

oh /t file inbox.dbx
which returns

// MACHINE: SERENITY

I used the tool you recommended and found out it's nvidia's nview software
that is causing the problem, so there isn't much I can do about it, so I'll
guess I'll make a little script that cleans up the tmp file(s) at startup.
Thanks for the tip though.

Turn off NView in NView in Control Panel. It is absolutely a crime this virus is tacked on to drivers. We want drivers not childish windows blinds type programs. If we wanted childish programs we would have already installed windows blinds (a program to make PC pretty and unusuable).

I actually use dual displays, so I need it for now, as I'm severly
dissapointly with the 2d output quality of my nvidia card, I'll be buying a
ati one soon anyway, I hope their software is better.

It should only have what's needed for the card. Not transparent menus or silly hotkeys. Are they a utility company making the computer program equivelent of stupid cheap plastic toys or a video hardware mfg.
