OK, found your pics ... see attachment

I see they use the Asus black ribbon cables for DVD/CD drives ... but I got the colour right for the SATA drive.

:D

Actually, we took a look inside (looked, didn't touch) before setting the PC up again, just to ensure that nothing had loosened in transit (it was packaged on it's side so). All the cables were in place (although I certainly don't mind checking again.) Took more pics too, but haven't had chance to upload them from the camera yet.

Um.... I am a tad stuck Mucks ... when you say to check in BIOS that it is set to Auto detect the HD ... which tab is that under please? I keep looking, but then go around in a bit of a circle (I've not ventured into BIOS very much previously.)

Can you point me in the right direction for your MB, or just tell me what one you got ... I forgot, and err, can't find the specs.

I'll download the manual and have a look for you. ;)

You may not find the SATA drive being listed in the BIOS, so don't worry on that point just yet.

OK, got the manual, you got yours handy ... hmmm, different, not seen a BIOS like that before ...

Take a look at the pic I did of V_R's insides (attachment) ... see I circled the HD cables ... I cannot see them on your PC pics as the wiring loom in front hides the HD ... if it easy enough to do, check for me that these are pushed firmly into the HD ... carefully. ;)

Your BIOS does indeed have auto-setting for SATA ... it should not have been touched by the PCS tech, but who knows at this stage what they did/did not do.

Sorry to be ages Mucks ... however, I found that not just the cable you'd indicated, but several others were not fully "home" when I gently pressed them. I've got the side back on again, do you reckon I should try rebooting again?

Yep, go ahead ... :thumb:

"tech tip" #2 ... never close the case until you are satisfied all is in working order.

I just opened the Gin bottle & got the Indian Tonic water out of the fridge ... but I'm all out of lemons, bugger. :wall:

I wonder if the pancake lemon in the squeeze bottle is the same ??

LoL ... I hoped it was just a "transit" problem ... some of them SATA cables fall off on their own. I went through 3 on mine till I found one that stuck ... must borrow my Hot-Glue-Gun back off me brother. ;)

Drinks all round then ... :D

This round's definitely on me :D :thumb: I'm just having a prowl around to re-familiarise myself with Vista ... it's surprising how quickly one forgets things, although that's probably just me :p

You will loose the training wheels in a few days ... ;)

Now, back to 'work' crunchie, and lets see what temps you got. :D

Ok Cap'n Crunchie, it's been crunching happily on both cylinders ... er, cores, and so far, the temps have remained pretty constant, (not exactly PC Specialist's recorded temps of "35 to 37 deg on a full burn" but certainly an improvement (and I don't actually know what device/software they used to get their measurement, so that might account for the difference.) Here are the CoreTemp readings:

A "burn test" is usually not as good as simply installing XP/Vista, to diagnose Ram/hardware issues, or Boinc for testing the efficiency of the HSF ... ;)

At least they are a damned sight better than before. :thumb:

Yes Mucks, I did wonder ... I left BOINC on the PC and explained that it had influenced the temps in my covering note, so I really thought that they might have run it during their experiments to replicate the original problem  But, as you say, it is a lot better. I shall keep an eye on it though, just to see that things don't become silly again ;)

Thank you again for all your help with this, particularly yesterday - I think I would still have been going around in circles and getting thoroughly lost amongst the BIOS otherwise  (Should have left myself a trail of breadcrumbs.... )
