Task update no longer automatically updating in task list

Guest

As of 2 weeks ago, Task Updates received in my Inbox, are no longer
automatically removed from the Inbox and updated in the Task List when
double-clicked.
Until 2 weeks ago, double-clicking on the update in the Inbox, would
automatically remove the task from the Inbox and update the task in the Task
List.
Does annyone have any suggestions?

DId you recently install the January 10 security update for Outlook (KB892843)? If so, this is a problem commonly reported with that update. It does not reproduce in all cases, though, so it would be helpful if you could provide the following information:

-- Outlook build number from Help | About
-- Mail account configuration (Exchange, POP3, IMAP4, etc.)
-- Number of .pst files in the profile
-- Names of any Outlook add-ins you're using

Outlook build number: 11.8002.6568 SP2
Mail: POP3
1 PST file
Using Google desktop plugin

Looking forward to getting to the bottom of this issue...it's quite a
pain!

Try disabling the Google plugin and restarting OUtlook. And please quote this message when you post back.

Disabling the google plugin didn't do anything... - tasks still can't
be opened/accepted.

Nobody said it would make a difference. What we're trying to do is find a 100% reproducible scenario. We don't have one yet. Thanks for your help.

Hi Sue

Outlook 2003 - 11.8002.6568 SP2
Installed as part of Office Professional Enterprise Edition using a domain
GPO.
Updated with WSUS.
Basic POP3 / SMTP mail server
3 PST files in my case, 1 PST in others'.
Adobe Acrobat 7 Standard 7.05 installed, (includes "Adobe PDF" menu and
macros in Outlook)

Other users on same domain with same issue, using Small Business 2003
installed off CD.

Received advice from MS Support (who BTW, have now given up on me) to detect
and repair including "Discard my customised settings..." which did nothing
more than annoy me for nearly an hour putting all my settings back and
repairing my rules.

Any change if you remove the Acrobat add-in?

I doubt it.

To remove the plug in I would have to remove Acrobat, then go through the
whole activation process to put it back.
Of all of us affected, I'm the only one here with Acrobat, so it's pretty
clearly not the problem.

What DOES seem to work is to remove
"Security Update for Office 2003 (KB892843): OLKINTff"

WSUS puts it back by the next day.

Obviously there is something seriously wrong with the security update
itself, that screws up the deciphering of winmail.dat in tasks.

But I am loathed to completely ignore the update, especially when there is
little information to the actual vulnerability or how it is implemented.

Except ... that not everyone with that security update installed is seeing the problem. That's why we're interested in more information. You may want to open a support incident with Microsoft so they can collect more data about your configuration.

Yeah, tried that Sue. But thanks for the suggestion.

It was a rather disappointing exercise.
I initially told them I use regular POP and SMTP (also tried my home
account), that I had tried "Detect and Repair", and that it had happened
simultaneously on all OL2003 in our domain - after updating KB892843 with
WSUS.

They asked me pretty much the same questions over and over, then put it into
the too hard basket:

Is this an Exchange account?
"No. We use POP/SMTP"

I would like you to follow the steps below to run a repair to your Office
Outlook and see if this make any help.
1. Click on Help then Detect and Repair
2. Click to select Discard my customized settings and restore default
settings
3. Click Start to start the repair.
"Yes, tried that"

Do you have an exchange account?
"No."

Have you tried Detect and Repair?
"Yes"

This routine continued like this for a while, getting no more or less
helpful. When he got sick of me, I was told that there is a case and MS is
working on a fix.
I asked the case number, which returned me this little ditty in response:

----
The update is still in the progress of research therefore at the moment I am
unable to tell when the exact date the update will be released is. Do not
worry David, I understand that your system is updating through SUS server,
you will get the latest update once the service pack is released.

David, with your permission, if you do not have any other issue, I would
like to temporarily close this case as the update will be released soon. You
can always write in to this email again if you need further assistance after
applying the service pack update. I will reopen the case to follow-up.
----

I'm still in the progress of being rather unimpressed.

Sue,

FYI, I have prevented it from loading, as described.
There is no change.

You should be able to remove the Outlook add-in by itself using the
technique described at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002sp3.htm#problems
