Task pane is gone!

I have Excel 9.0 and should have a task pane to the right when I open Excel.
It is not there and is not listed under the view toolbar listing. Can I get
it back with some simple instructions? Need some help here as taking a class
on Excel and am stuck until I get back the task pane!

select View | Task Pane or press Ctrl-F1 (which toggles it on and off)

The Task Pane was introduced in Excel 2002 (version 10.0), so you won't
find it in your version.

There should be other ways to accomplish your tasks though, so if you
explain what you're trying to do, someone can probably help.
