When attempting to use XP Task Manager I am getting the
error message "Task Manager has been disabled by your
administrator. As I am the administrator can anybody
advise me on how to enable Task Manager

I am running the Home Edition and have more than one user.
Will this enable/disable all users or is there some way to
disable users other than the administrator.

Thanks in advance!

That key is created by parasites to avoid being detected via the
taskmanager.. if your computer has not been infected, the
key will probably not exist. In the Windows Pro Edition creating
the registry key with its value and setting it to 1 disables the taskmanager
for the current user member of the administrators group, it does not
affect the default administrator. For Windows XP Professional,
there's a way to disable the taskmanger for users via the Group
Policy Editor but that is not available in the Home Edition.
For Home edition your only option is to edit the registry key in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
Current Version\Policies\ in the right pane right click on the
empty space and select New Key, rename the new key to System,
select System and in the right pane, right click and select new
DWORD Value, rename the DWORD value to DisableTaskMgr...
double click on it and type 1 to disable the taskmanager.

I am not sure if this will disable the taskmngr for users in the Home
Edition so I cannot make any guarantee.
Be adviced that editing the registry could damage your computer
if you get overconfident, you should avoid editing the registry unless
you really know what you are doing and follow these steps closely.

I have exactly the same problem and have found no way to
enable Task Manager.

The solution to your problem is in this thread, here it is again:

open the registry editor and look for
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \System
Name: DisableTaskMgr
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1= Enable this key, that is Disable TaskManager
Value: 0= Disable this key, that is Enable TaskManager

Or go to this page and download the REG fix and double click to add it
to the registry.

If you don't have spyware scanners installed, install them now since
parasites are what disable the taskmanager in the first place.
Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware SE are unbeatable for this
purpose as long as they are updated before the first scan and check
for updates at least once a week.

Hope this helps.

enable Task Manager.
Hi

This might be the work of the Swen worm or something similar
(it could be from some spyware or parasite as well).

To try to solve your problem, do the following:

Copy and paste the URL address lines into your IE address bar:

http://www.dougknox.com

In the menu, select Win XP Utilities, Disable/Enable Task Manager.

To try to find what has caused this:

Run a cleanup tool, e.g. Stinger.exe from McAfee, it removes 30+
virus/worms in one sweep.

McAfee AVERT Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

and this one:

On Line Virus Scan
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Be sure to run an updated Antivirus program at all times.

For the Spyware and Parasites part, you will need to run other tools:
