Task Manager Program Error

I got a couple of viruses recently, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten rid of them; I've scanned my entire system with Norton Anti-Virus using the most up-to-date virus definitions, and I've also scanned my system using Ad-Aware using the newest definitions with that as well. However, since I was attacked by the viruses, when I launch task manager I get the window "Program Error| taskmgr.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." Needless to say, when I restart the program it gives me the same error.
I read elsewhere on this forum that running System File Checker (Sfc.exe) could fix a problem such as this. I ran Sfc, and it DID work, but only the first time I run Task Manager. After closing task manager and re-opening it, I get the same errors. I ran Sfc again, and again task manager worked again, but just like the first time, it stopped working after I closed it and restarted it.
Is it possible that I have a virus somewhere that cannot be detected? Or is this some other problem
Thanks in advance!

Try this with sfc at the command prompt and with the Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Make sure the letter of the CD-ROM drive is the one that it was when you installed Windows 2000:

sfc /scannow /purgecache

Then restart WITH the CD-ROM in the drive. Do nothing until you get to the point where you login.
