Task Manager has no options or tabs

On my Dell Latitude my Task Manager opens in a reduced
window showing only CPU Usage and CPU Usage History (not
even the Mem U and Mem U H) and the task bar icon is just
a grayed out box which clicking/right-clicking has no
effect on. There are no File options
(File/Options/View/Help) and there are no tabs
(Apps/Pro/Perf). So, in effect, Task Manager is pretty
useless.

A friend suggested that it may be infected with a virus of
some kind attemting to stop me closing browser windows or
apps from executing, but I have NortonIS 2004 with virus
defs up to date as of yesterday and I also use adaware and
spybot and none of these report any problems.

Any and all help and suggestions appreciated,

Thanks.
