Windows XP Task Bar trouble - 44 Language Bars

My comp:

XP Professional
McAfee Antivirus
cable modem
intel centrino
1700 MHz
512MB RAM

The problem that I have is that for some reason I have 44 instances of the "Language Bar" open in my Task Bar, and it won't let me disable them. This renders my task bar essentially unusable. What should I do to permanently disable them? One day I was able to disable each of them individually (I can't do this any more), but when I restared the computer, all 44 instances opened again.

Thanks.

Un-Zip the attachment, right-click the .reg file and select merge, or just double-click on it.

It should reset your taskbar ... if not, I would like to see a HijackThis Log posted.

You don't have anything I can "see" that would cause the ridiculous amount of Language bars to open, but you have a lot of programs loading there ... as a matter of interest, what is your native Language and what is the PC set to use ... you can Delete any unused Languages.

Unfortunately, you do have a couple of "nasties" on your system ... I suggest you get HJT to "Fix" the following ...

C:\Program Files\WopVideo Player\WopTorrent.exe
Unknown to me, your choice to fix it

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
Extremely Nastie, This entry should be fixed

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp
Nastie, needs fixing

O3 - Toolbar: AIM Search - {40D41A8B-D79B-43d7-99A7-9EE0F344C385} - C:\Program Files\AIM Toolbar\AIMBar.dll
Up to you, but I treat it as a nastie. Your choice

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
Not dangerous, but unnecessary. System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling StartCenter via Preferences

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Not dangerous, but unnecessary

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WOPVideos] "C:\Program Files\WopVideo Player\WopTorrent.exe" -icontray
I do not know what this is, but I would not have it running at startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
Not dangerous, but unnecessary

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
Not dangerous, but unnecessary. Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe Reader application. Your choice

O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe
Not dangerous, but unnecessary. Puts AOL icon in System Tray (*.* denotes version if present). Connect to AOL via the desktop shortcut or use Start / Programs

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
The entry is unnecessary and can be fixed

O4 - Global Startup: QuickBooks Update Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe
Not dangerous, but unnecessary. Associated with Intuits Quickbooks but not required. Possibly to do with the payroll update service but youre prompted to check for updates when appropriate whether this is running or not

O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)
Ouch, this is a bugger of a nastie. Needs fixing

usual disclamer ;)
I cannot be held responsible for any 'problems' that may arrise from fixing the above.

As I said, I cannot see why you are having problems in your taskbar, you do have a lot of unnecessary 'programs' loading.

I also suggest installing some sort of anti-nastie program such as SuperAntiSpyware ... I would install SpywareBlaster and SpyBotSearch&Destroy along with Windows Defender.

I have not time for McAfee, and would bin it in favour of a better AV program ... up to you on that one. ;)

Once you have "fixed" the above with HJT AND scanned your PC/Laptop with all the programs I have mentioned, please post another HJT Log ... ta

My native lanugage is English. I think it is currently the only language that is enabled, but I'm not sure if I'm checking it properly. How do I disable or uninstall languages?

Here is a new hijackthis log. I think I've fixed everything you've said:

Your Log is clean of any Nasties that I can see ... :thumb:

Language Settings
Go to Start / Control Panel / Date, Time & Regional Options
Click, Regional & Language Options
Click the Languages Tab
Click Details

... there you can delete/remove all except English UK
Apply, press OK as many times as needed.

Do me a favour, I don't know this program ...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WOPVideos] "C:\Program Files\WopVideo Player\WopTorrent.exe" -icontray

... it is "loading" into your Taskbar, could it be causing a problem?? ... no harm in removing it, you should still be able to run it from the Start button / Programs

Hello,

I've done everything now, and I'm still having the same trouble... there are no other languages in that menu-actually there weren't even any to delete. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Strange ... did you try and 'add' English UK ?

I need to see pictures ... :thumb:

Here it is... the language is now British English, but all the other settings are for the US. Originally it was set to US English... not sure if that really makes a difference. Regardless, here are the pictures!

Thanks again.

thanks

Use the 'drop down' menus in the Yankie pic and select British/English/United Kingdom ... in all the different menu's.

Bloody MS will never get it into their heads ... there is no such language as American English ... if there was, it would be Native Americans, the Red Indians.

Dunno what other "fixes" to suggest ... :(

oh well... is there somewhere else i should try?

i'm glad to have this thing cleaned up but the original problem is still incredibly annoying, as my taskbar is essentially useless with all of these things open

There is an MS 'hotfix' for a similar problem, but it is aimed at Japanese language.

There are also reports of the same problem in Office Word, with multiple tool bars opening, had that one myself once.

You could try this tool from Kelly's ... http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

I missed it first time there ... a very good site for 'fixes' to a lot of glitches. :thumb:

You can also try going back to ... Control Panel / Regional & Language Options / Languages / Details / Language Bar / Uncheck the boxes / Click OK

See how we do on that one ... you can always re-tick if needed.
