Table of Contents number display

I created a brief in Word 2007. The court requires the numbers in the text
to display between dashes (e.g., - 1 -, - 2 -, etc.). When I generate the
table of contents, the numbers display with dashes. How can I get the
numbers in the table of contents to display WITHOUT the dashes, while
retaining the dashes in the numbering for the body of the document?

Sounds like page numbers.

When you type the two dashes in the header or footer around your page
number, be sure you're typing them _outside_ the PAGE field -- to
temporarily see the field, select the page number and press Shift-F9.
The dashes need to be not inside the brackets that appear. When you're
done fixing the dashes, select the field again and press Shift-F9 to
hide it again. (That's the 9th function key at the top of the
keyboard.) Then update your ToC.

Ahh - I had inserted the dashed numbers in the text automatically using Page
Numbers in the headers + Format Page Numbers + Number Format. When I change
this to a plain number and insert the dashes manually, it solves the problem!
Thanks!!
