Table Caption Continued ?

Fellow Forum Members,
Is it possible to tweak theTable Caption field so that it automatically
appears as “Table ##. List of Vendors – Continued “ any time the table splits
on two separate pages?

Through a SEARCH I learned that the work around is to manually type in
“Table ##. List of Vendors – Continued “ inside the HEADER row and then white
masking the word “Continued†on the first HEADER row.

I can’t rely on this approach because it prevents the ability to generate a
List Of Tables since a genuine table caption can’t be inserted inside the
HEADER row. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Lastly, my friend
believes since this task can be done using FrameMaker, it should also be
possible to do it using WORD 2003.

A genuine caption can certainly be inserted in a table header, though not in
one step (Word does want to insert it outside the table). But you can insert
it above the table and drag it into the table, and it does show up in a List
of Tables (I've tried this).

Where the difficulty would come in would be that the "continued" part would
be part of the caption in the List of Tables. You can get around that, I
think, by reinserting the bookmark that Word automatically creates.

I don't think this will be possible. The bookmarks in the text are
*generated* (for hyperlink purposes) when Word updates the TOC field;
any changes would be overridden. Instead, you'd have to use create the
list of tables based on TC fields.

Thanks to all for your tips. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that a
genuine table caption could be dragged into the header row, but confusing as
to why creating one from within a header row is not possible. I do have one
followup question. Does this work around approach require one setup two
separate header rows in the table? One for the genuine table caption, and one
for the table column headers.

I would use two heading rows in this case, yes, because you'll undoubtedly
want to merge the top heading row (containing the caption).

Another approach you can use, if the table is long enough to justify it (and
I would think it would have to be, if it's long enough to need Continued
captions to begin with), is to put the table in a separate section with
"Different first page" enabled. Put the caption above the table in the
document on the first page (leaving the First Page Header empty--or
containing just the usual header stuff) and the Continued caption (below the
usual header stuff, if any) in the Header.

Thanks for the tip Suzanne. The approach I feel most comfortable with is the
white masking of the word "continued" you covered on another thread.
However, there is a new problem I'm wondering if you know can be fixed.
Table Caption one needs to be centered on Header row #1. Currently, it's off
center because the word "continued" is covered with a white mask, but on the
subsequent pages where the table continues it shows up correctly centererd.
Is there a way to fix this problem? Any help will be greatly aprreciated.
Thanks.

I don't think this will work for centered headings; there's just no way to
make it centered both with and without "continued."
