Tab no longer changes level on lists

I'm trying to make a multilevel list and using tab or shift+tab no longer
changes the level. Any help on how to fix this?

Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options > "AutoFormat As You Type" tab and turn on
the setting "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces".

In case of Word 2007, you will find the AutoCorrect dialog box here:
Office button > Word Options > Proofing – click the "AutoCorrect Options"
button.
