Systems Runs Slow After Boot on XP

R

After booting on XP,

The system runs extremly slow. Upon looking in task
manager the CPU is 100% busy. A look at the processes
runing indicates a task "system" is using 99% of the CPU.

You would expect the boot to finish and the "system idle"
process to take over.

The unit has 512kb of memory.

Any thoughts?
