Have you tried to use a bootable disk for say Win98 and rund fdisk?
This is what I would try.

1. Boot to dos prompt using Win98 boot disk.
2. Run fdisk.
3. Delete all partitions. If there is an NTFS partition, you will have
to chose a non-dos partition to delete.
4. Verify that there are no partitions.
5. Drop the XP install disk in and boot. Let XP load up and you should
get to a screen that will let you create a new partition to install.

Of course all is based on you not having any information worth saving on
the hard drive. Also, if you have 2 or more drives, remove them and
only have the disk you wish to install XP on in the system.

Good luck,
Bill
