System standby / hibernate??

I just bought a new laptop and some of the settings are much different than
my desktop as far as power saving modes are, so i was wondering if someone
could help me figure them out...
what is the difference between system standby and hibernate?
also how come my screen saver will come on for a few minutes and then shut
itself off? without anything touching the laptop.
I also want the "turn off monitor" to work, and it will turn off the monitor
if i set it to turn off after one min (which is a bit impratical to leave it
set at). But if i have the screen saver set to turn on after 3 min and then
the monitor to turn off after 10 min the screen saver will come on, then go
off, and the monitor will never shut off. Does this have something to do with
having both a screen saver and the turn of monitor both set?
Since im at school I like to leave an away message up on AIM and then just
have the screen saver come on and then the monitor shut off, but I've been
coming back from classes (2+ hours later) with nobody in my room and the
screen saver wont even be on, so I'm a bit confused.
Its is a brand new laptop i just bought it about 3 days ago.
Could this have anything to do with AIM? might it turn the screen saver off
it someone signs on or off aim? I know that that didn't happen with my
desktop but I can't think of any other explinations.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Recommend your first step is to go to Start>Help and Support
In the Search block you can type Hibernate and then Standby.
Read it for yourself. Also, recommend you take the WindowsXP
new users Tour. For future information, you could purchase
WindowsXP for Dummies (pardon the name). It is excellent and
runs about $20.00 at Walden or other book stores. Happy putering. :~)
