Screen saver locks computer, display properties slow!

D

DLGolfs

When I use the screen saver, after a long time ( I leave the computer on all
night so AVG , and my spyware will run, separately)the screen saver is
running, then I try to awake the computer and have to hard boot OR the screen
saver freeezes and then I try to awake the computer and have to hard boot.
Addiitionally, the display properties is VERY SLOW in responding and does
not show up on task manager or processes.
My settings are never turn off monitor, hard drive, or do not use system
standby or hibernate. I turned all those off, I don't use my keyboard to
"stand by" etc.
If I don't use the screen saver, all is fine

Which screensaver?
What Antivirus do you have?
Specific version/flavor of Windows?
Service pack level?
How much memory?
How often do you rdefragment your hard disk drive?
When was the last time you did a disk cleanup?
When was the last time you performed a CHKDSK?
What antimalware software do you use?

Pipes
Windows XP SP3
AVG Lavasoft windows defender
CHDSK-2 days ago
clean up- one week ago
defrag-one week ago
Howevr, it happens when NOTHING ran, I just walk away and then when I come
back the screen saver is frozen and/or is running, when I try to wake it up,
I have to hard boot

This can happen if one of the foloowing is true:
1- Less RAM or your RAM going bad (dirty bits) you either increase the
amount of RAM or Run a test.
2- Lots of Apps updating is the same time causing the desktop to freeze not
the scre4ensaver.
3- An overheating issue ( hence power down the system then it will run for a
while).
4- An infection from malware/viruse and you need to run a thorough scan from
another vendor(s).

Try another screensaver and see if this will hold.

Performed disk cleanup and defragment. One file did not defrag.

Nass wrote that if could be malware, I am running lavasoft, wind def, spybot
and AVG has spyware protection....
I have 2 GB ram, not there either.
I have tried another screen save and it did the same thing

Now that I have disk clean up, etc. I am going to reboot and try it again,
let's see

D

DLGolfs

CPU is not hot or dirty, cked that
2GB ram
Also, no other applications are running in the background, even if they
were, eventually the screen saver would respond. I have waited 5 mintues and
no response.
I have 3 malware software runningng full scan everyday
RAM maybe dirty? don't know

I just ran disk cleanup and defrage, going to reboot and thry it.

D

DLGolfs

Ran disk cleanup and defrag, still happening
Could it be the tea timer or resident shield of the AVG or the spybot SD
helper running in the background? I wouud think eventually it would
awake....but the screen save 'freezes"

Update: Looks like it is freezing the entire computer, mouse, keyboard, and
has nothing to do with the screen saver. All is frozen.
I have downloaded the procexp and can run that to see what is running but I
can't get there if my mouse is frozen.
I don't think it has anything to do with the scren saver. Basically when it
sits unattended, after ? minutes, it freezes. I turned the screen saver off
and in the AM, everything was frozen.
I noticed an extra device on a USB port and uninstalled the USB and rebooted.
Also, I install software for my piece of junk HP printer (14 hours of
software support and it still does not print!) J6480 Office jet. When I
installed it , I updated it and I received an error that my /$secure and
cmd.exe file was corrupted. ran ckdsk and nothing there, delted the update
and software and re-installed the HP software downloaded from HP website with
the help of the support team. Could this have anything to do with the
problem? The problem started after that time.

It could be, if the printer software broken something it can cause this issue.

Have a look in the Event Viewer and send us the error messages you will see
there in in the event viewer in your next post:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

I noticed an extra device on a USB port and uninstalled the USB and rebooted.

Hi,
How many accounts on this machine?
Did you have trouble updating your system before?
How is the Internet Connections and the Power Management Options set for the
Network Adapter ( you can see that by going to Device manager and right click
the Network adapter >> select properties >> Power management:
[ ] Turn Off this device to save power ...or the like make sure this
unchecked.

Did you update the motherboard drivers recently from the machine

Could it be the tea timer or resident shield of the AVG or the spybot SD
helper running in the background? I wouud think eventually it would
awake....but the screen save 'freezes"

:

This can happen if one of the foloowing is true:
1- Less RAM or your RAM going bad (dirty bits) you either increase the
amount of RAM or Run a test.
2- Lots of Apps updating is the same time causing the desktop to freeze not
the scre4ensaver.
3- An overheating issue ( hence power down the system then it will run for a
while).
4- An infection from malware/viruse and you need to run a thorough scan from
another vendor(s).

Try another screensaver and see if this will hold.

As of 6/19 , my AVG and Lavasoft Ad-aware has not run as it is scheduled. I
leave my computer while I am sleeping and since after 30 minutes the computer
freezes, they have not been running. I did not notice this until yesterday.
So I opened procexp and left it up so I could see what was running when it
froze and it shows MSmpeng.exe (windows defender) 91.18, teatimer 1.96,
mpcmdfun.ext .98, hardware interrupt 2.23, etc.
So I am going to disable the WInd def from running in the background , since
I have the lavasoft and AVG and only run the win def once a day.
I also ran combofix (are you familar with that?) which in the past was
suggested and I will send the results to MAlwarebytes as they will analyze it
along with the DDS run.
How many accounts on this machine? I guess you are asking the AVG, Lavasoft,
WIn Defender, Malwarebytes, and Spybot. Only the AVG, Lavasoft and
Windefender work in the background, but I am going to stop the WinDefender
and only run the AVG and Lavasoft.
I have not had updating my system in the past.
I have to look at the INternet connection and power management when I get
home.
My Motherboard is an old one, so I will look but I doubt that there is an
update.

I did try to run the AVG full scan but after 30 minutes it froze. I ran the
Malwarebytes for 45 minutes and it ran OK, so I don't know why it is freezing.
If it is malware or adaware , my accounts are not detecting it.
I have run live.com in the past and have not been impressed, I do think it
may clean the registry, but it has never found any infections more than other
anti-virus programs. I have run trend micro and bit defender in the past also
and these find items but then are not always able to delete them. Trend micro
seams to hang on a few of my boxes , not just this one.

So when I get home I will disable the Windefender running in the background
and see if after 30 minutes it freezes again. I may then stop the AVG and
Lavasoft from running and see if it freezes too.
I will leave an e-mail of my findings? Any other suggestions?

I tried to send an e-mail but it was returned.
Please give me your e-mail address on a separate line so I can cut /paste it.
I did not know where it started and had to guess. I tried starting it at
the "to" and then sent it starting with the "you" and both were returned.

by the way: I only have one account on the box AND I let it sit at the
desktop for 4 hours and it did not freeze.
