system restore

I performed a system restore but now my apps are no where to be found.
clicking on the icons on the desktop, task bar, or in system folders does not
work. I tried to undo my system restore but I can not open it nor can I open
the "help and support" using start>help and support. Even my McAfee Security
Suit is missing but the icon is on the task bar (next to the clock) as if
it's running and protecting my pc. Tried to uninstall McAfee (so I can
reinstall) using "add and remove programs" but it only offered to remove the
program from the list since there was no programs to remove. Had to log off
in fear of making things worse. I am now at a family members house using
their pc to look for answers. Help!

I'm using windows xp prof with IE 7

I opened system restore via "start>help and support", selected "undo changes
to your computer using system restore" and restored my computer to an earlier
time (about late august) and followed the wizard.

what you might
try to do is to use
safemode and retry
your restore points

also, while in safemode
make sure you have
enough virtual memory.

as a temporary adjustment
to help overcome this issue
i suggest to set your virtual
memory at a fixed / custom size.

min / initial = 2
and a max = 1152

if your restore points
are still useless via safemode
and the vm resizing didnt help
as well, then I would suggest
to do a repair installation with
your windows cd.

here are the instructions:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

the repair installation will
replace corrupted system files
and create a fresh new restore
point.

just as a thought,
if your antivirus zapped a
virus from your system, then
the virus may had have some time
to damage your system files.

in which case, the system files
would need to be replaced with
genuine ones from the windows cd.

also, if the virus was stored in your
restore points, then this might be
the reason why your restore points
are being inhibited by your antiviral.

but all of the above are just
a few thoughts that may or may
not be applicable to the issue at hand.

it's hard to tell from our end what
exactly is going on with your system

keep us posted!

DB has an excellent suggestion about trying a System Restore from Safe
Mode. Next time you start just Tap F8 until
you get a Menu then select Safe Mode. Also, if you have the WinXP CD try a
Repair Install like DB mentioned.

db, Just a background, my initial issue began when my McAfee suite alerted me
that my pc was unprotected (this was an abrupt change of status since I’m
keen to my security status for many reasons) this was followed by an install
window and other odd pc behavior. One of which was extreme slowness and very
high system resource/memory usage. McAfee was unresponsive so I uninstalled
and reinstalled via McAfee secured website. I ran a complete scan to find 12
items (no quarantines) and no response required. However, my pc continued to
perform poorly which led to my decision to use system restore. I believe your
suggestions are on track with my issues. I will try them out and keep you
posted on the outcome. Thank you for sharing your expertise on the matter!

Rich Barry, Thanks for that important tidbit about F8. Nice to know there are
folks like you and db around. I’m extremely grateful. On my way home to try
it out and will be back with an update….
