system restore won't open, search function in windows explorer err

After my system did an update for window media player 11, I am having all
kinds of issues.

1. windows search function is not trying to search the internet and not my
hard drrive (even after double checking settings in properties and being sure
its set right)

2. system restore will NOT open, it just freezes.

3. adobe photoshop elements will not open

4. adobe photoshop cs2 telling me my user information is missing or
invalid.....

Another option would be to try running System Restore from Safe Mode.
