System Restore not working

M

Marty

OS = XP - SP2 up-to-date; when trying to set system restore in System
Properties I get the following error message: "An exception occurred while
trying to run "C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\Windows\System32\system.cpl",System"

system.cpl is not in System32 and search found it nowhere on the computer

I reinstalled System Restore, but that didn't help.

System Volume Information folder is empty.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Thanks, Gerry, for replying. This morning I ran chkdsk and after boot, SR is
working OK, both in setting restore points and in System Properties.

But to answer your question, I have AVG Free 7.5, Spyware Blaster, Windows
Defender, AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware 2007, all up-to-date.

However, there does seem to be a problem with System Volume Information.
Even after setting a restore point, SVI shows empty, but in copying files to
a backup HDD with WD's Data Lifeguard, that shows there are 70 files in SVI
but will not copy them.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that
the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Notwithstanding there remain some files which remain hidden. You still
will not see the System Volume Information folder.

Gerry: Followed your advice and tried doing what the "How to Gain Access . .
.." link instructed but with no success. Not a problem. Will just let it be
for the time being. I was trying to setup a second bootable HDD, but there
are other files in the "Windows Directory" that won't copy either. Don't know
why because I've done it before and all files copied fine. Computers!!!

Getting access to the System Volume Information folder is not alway
easy. Is your Windows XP Home Edition, Professional or another?

OS = XP home with NTFS. After starting to type this, I went back to the "How
to Gain Access . . ." link and, using the cacls tool at c:\>, finally gained
access. I had tried that before but used an incorrect user name. Thanks for
your help.

Now, do you have any idea why the SVI folder and 105 files in the Windows
folder will not copy? I'm using Western Digital's "Date Lifeguard Tools" to
do it. Everything else copies OK.

I have never considered copying the System Volume Information folder.
Why do you want to copy the contents of the folder?

Gerry: It's not that I want to copy that folder. It is that "Data Lifeguard",
when set to partition and make a drive bootable, copies everything that is on
the source drive. It wouldn't get past SVI. So I tried to copy the Windows
directory separately, but it wouldn't copy 105 files from there, reporting
they wouldn't open.

Further, I've tried to scan the drive with AVG Free 7.5 and AVG Anit-Spyware
and both of them hang up when they get to SVI. Neither the "Data Lifeguard"
copy process nor the scans have ever failed to copy or to scan SVI or all of
the files in the Windows directory in several previous uses.
