system restore initialization failed

hi. there's an error message appearing when i try to start my system restore
utility.
first of all, i'm sorry for my bad English. my operating system is not of an
English version, so those error messages are also not in English. so i'll try
to translate it into English as exactly, as possible.
here's the message i get:

"System Restore does not manage to protect your computer. Restart the
computer and start the System Restore again."

and it happens everytime i try to start the system restore.

here's what i found in the event log:

Source: SRService
ID: 104

"Error during initialization of system restore."

Though my translation is not very exact, i hope you'll find these error
messages familiar.
can it be fixed? and can i save my previous restore points?
i really need to restore my WIndows to a previous date.

Rstrui.exe is what loads your Restore points . Read this & see if you have
it set up correctly .

1. In My Computer, click the Tools menu -> Folder Options.
2. On the View tab, make sure to check the option "Hide extensions for known file types".
3. Click OK.
4. Click the Start menu -> Run. Type: " %windir%\inf " (Without quotation
marks) in the Open field. Click OK.
5. Locate and select the file " sr.inf ". Right-click it and then click Install.

before doing that, i have to be sure that my previous restore points won't be
deleted. is it possible to save them? i really need to make a restore.

When system restore goes bad there really is no way to save the old
restore points.

Why is it so important that you have access to these old restore points?
SR is not a backup system. It does not restore data.

I know it doesn't help with the current situation but consider using a
disk imaging program to save an image of the hard drive or clone the
hard drive. Images can be saved on internal or external drives and DVD.
An external device offers the best safety. Doing frequent images
saves you from recovery issues like this that happen with system
restore. Programs that do this are Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image,
and Terabyte Unlimited's Image for Windows and BootitNG.

I know that's it's not a backup system, and I don't need to restore any data.
actually i really want to get my old SP1 back. you know I installed SP2, cuz
someone said, that it fixes all system problems, I mean it brings all the
system utilities and services to their standart conditions (and that's why it
should fix problems with system restore). now I understand, that it doesn't
work at all :( so I don't know any other way to uninstall SP2 and get SP1
back, except restoring the system.
that's why I need my old system restore points.

You got some bad info. SP2 should only be applied to a system that is
working properly. It should not be used on a problem system to fix it.
As you found that only causes more problems.
