"System" Process usage 50% HELP

I have a cyber power PC running windows xp media center edition. I have a
Intel Core2 2.4ghz with 2GB of ram and a 300gb hard drive with 285gb free.
About a week ago, I noticed that my processor cores were running at or near
50% and it stays there. I opened the task manager and noticed that the
"System" process was useing at or near 50% of the CPU. I haven't installed
any new programs recently. I ran defrag, virus checks, spyware/malware
checks, etc. with no improvement. I also reinstalled windows using the
repair windows installation option. This didn't help either. I consider
myself pretty knowledgable but this has just stumped me. please help

The process called "System" is using the CPU. The description and command
line are blank. The path says "Not Available".

Anti-Virus: AVG Anti-Virus
Fire Wall: Zone Labs Zone Alarm
anti-spyware: Webroot Spysweeper

Are you still using Windows Task Manager? Did you download the
freeware utility Process Explorer?

Hope this helps.

See what is show as a running service in a HijackThis log?

Install and run HijackThis:
Download HijackThis (Freeware)

Open a Command Prompt window (Start - Run - CMD) and enter the
following command:

TASKLIST /SVC

The line for System should show N/A in the Services column.

Good luck

Is this safe to do to improve system performance? I am trouble shooting a
system that is running slow.

The command TASKLIST /SVC is just a reporting and information tool. It
will not change anything about your computer. However the
informantion it reports may provide a clue as to why you are getting
such high CPU usage for this specific process.

Good luck
