System Meltdown

L

Lewis Young

Well I've gone and done it to my Gateway XP now!
Guess I picked up a series of malware programs containing trojans.
First my spyware and anti-virus programs failed to detect them then I lost
my task manager. Now I have lost access to my administrator.
I managed to download a malware cleaning program using this old HP Win 98
computer and that was how I found all the corruption.
After trying installatin 3 times I was able to install on the fourth.
But as luck would have it when cleaning the system I lost my winsock, IE and
all internet access.
System restore does not seem to work as it should restore from the
partitioned hard drive.
I'm trying to get restore disks from Gateway but that seems to be a problem
as I am unable to complete the order.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can reinstall the window sockects as
I am note overly savy on the deep down technical aspects of computers.
I've tried reinstalling IE 7 but am getting runtime errors??
Figure I'll need to change my IP address when I have it back up and running
and it was suggested that I may need to change the hard drive as well if the
infection was to bad.

Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks
