System incursion via Web Client Network

Mughi

I was a bit taken aback yesterday to find My Network Places on my home
PC included an entry under Web Client Network for www.ecs.org. Don't
have a clue what they are or how they managed to set up this sort of
connection. I've blocked the site via my firewall, but I'm wondering
how I can prevent this sort of thing from happening again...is it even
necessary to have the Web Client Network service running? Googling
doesn't even turn it up as a security issue. Any advice would be
appreciated, thanks!

You can safely disable the WebClient service from Services. It is not
necessary. The Web Client service and the Web Client Network are provided
in XP as an alternative protocol and network provider to take advantage of
WebDAV. WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and
Versioning". It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol which allows
users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers. See
http://www.webdav.org/.
