System font seems to have switched to symbols

We turned the computer on yesterday and from the startup
screen instead of letters there are a bunch of symbols.
Our names are there next to the icon but underneath its
all symbols.

When we go to our next screen the icons are there but
with symbols. Same goes for the task bar. I'm hoping
it's something simple.

Oh and online any multi-choice option lists, they come
out gibberish too.

Start-Control Panel-Appearance and Themes-Fonts(Might take a while to find it if symbols are all you can see) Pick a font and try it. If you know that no one has changed the settings I recommend scanning foe virus's.
