system configuration utility

I have my system configuration utility set to "selective startup", yet every
time I re-boot my machine I get the window that the system configuration
utility has run and to check the checkbox to turn off the message and to NOT
run the utility. I click "ok" as I DO want to run the utility and get a
message I need to re-boot my pc for the settings to take affect. It appears
the settings are in place, but how do I stop the message from popping up
without disabling the utility from running?

Thanks,

Eddie G

You are misreading the message. If you say OK, it reverts to normal startup.
You want to leave it alone and just check Do not show me this again. Run
msconfig again when you want to change it. You do not want the utility to run
every time.

The check box says "Don't show this message or launch the System
Configuration Utility when Windows start:" Shouldn't it say "starts" with
an "s" at the end?? Anyway, if I check it the utility will NOT launch.
There is another line that says "The system configuration Utility is
currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to
be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts." So how can
I use Selective Startup without getting that message?

The configuration changes made by MSCONFIG are recorded in the
registry and therefore become permanent.

MSCONFIG does not need to be run at startup in order for the changes
to be in effect.

The only reason for having MSCONFIG running at Startup is if you are
making repeated changes and wanting to assess the effects of the
different changes. An example would be if you were trying different
combinations of items that are enabled or disabled at startup to see
how these affected the bootup time and the usability of the system
after it was booted.

Good luck

Hi Eddie,

You do not have to reboot. Select exit without rebooting. In addition,
this will help:

Automated Edit:

Stop the Selective Startup Screen (Line 173) Right hand side

Manual Edit:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key and delete it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSConfig

I know...I am NOT changing running MSCONFIG or changing the selective
startup at all. I get the message I referred to every time I re-boot
WITHOUT making any changes.
