System Clock; perhaps CMOS battery problem ?

Hi,

My system clock does not run when my laptop is turned off, i.e. it will show
the time and date when it was last turned on as opposed to the current time
and date. When the computer is turned on it will run normally.

It's a new sony vaio and was working fine until about a week - 10 days ago.
I've been troubleshooting with microsoft support over the phone but nothing
has worked so far.

My question is, is there a way to rule out the CMOS battery being dead as a
problem ? I would hate to think that a laptop which is not yet 2 months old
needs a new one.

Also, on a laptop, if it is this battery, I take it that I can't replace it
myself.

Any help as regards a good diagnostic to confirm/exclude the CMOS battery
would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Eoghan

Change the CMOS battery which is definitely your problem. But.....
in that your laptop is only 2 months old, isn't it under warranty?
Take it back to where you purchased it and explain the problem.
Why are you troubleshooting with MS when your laptop is a Sony?

Byte Many thanks; I was going through MS as initially I didn't understand
what the problem was, and secondly wanted to exclude any other possibilities
which I could self-remedy.

Thankfully the laptop is indeed under warranty.

Thank you again
