For some reason, this does not sound like a real Windows XP error message
(unless its from the BIOS) as most systems do not monitor the battery (or at
least that I have seen)

Does it say anything else at all ? Like the name of the program that is
telling you ? Also what kind of PC do you have ?

This has NOTHING to do with any OS. This is a BIOS level message. It
simply means that the BIOS battery is getting low and needs replaced.

or there is a problem with the battery holder as it's unlikely to have gone
flat so fast.

That is the hardware of the machine reporting, before things ever get
near windows. It means that the battery on the motherboard that keeps
essential data in being, and the clock running, while power is off is
running dangerously low. Get it replaced immediately - it is not that
difficult, but if you are at all uncertain take it to a repair shop
