SyncToy error with 8.3 filename 123456~1.123

Repeatable bug in SyncToy v1.0.0.64: Create a left folder called "left".
Create a right folder called "right". In left folder create a text file
called RELIAN~1.txt -- Set up a Folder Pair that does Echo, then do Preview.
The file shows up in Preview as expected. Do "Run" and the report shows 1
Failed under New, "Error: File not found" -- the file is not copied. The
error was encountered while backing up PCLaw files (file is RELIAN~1.RBF --
that's an application file created by the software developer so I can't just
rename it). So, any 8.3 file of the format 123456~1.123 fails for New.

I can confirm that this happens repeatedly.

Is anyone working on fixing these defects in SyncToy or has the project been
abandoned?

March 9, 2006: I am experiencing the same problem on the same version. The
files had been previously archived from a Win95 box, to a non-windows box,
and then back to a Win-XP-SP2 box; so I suspect that the long name that was
previously associated with the 8.3-format name was lost. I assumed that
SyncToy failed to find the long name and gave up with an incorrect error
message. I ended up globally substituting a hyphen for all the tilde
characters in the 8.3 format names in order to get it to work.

I have replicated this on over 10 user workstations on our network, each
system is running W2k SP4 or WinXP SP2 with SyncToy v1.1.0.74. I have
noticed that this bug only seems to affect filenames with the '~1'
truncation, but filenames truncated with '~2' or '~3' etc. it works just fine.

Anyone else noticed this? Any clues on when MS is going to fix this one?
Other than this bug, the tool works great!

Latest SyncToy v1.2.0.75 still suffers from same problem :-(

BTW: don't think these kind of filenames are just legacy, look inside I386
directory of the WinXP CD, there you will find UTOPIA~1.WA_ This file will
NOT be copied by SyncTool !!! (but subsequent UTOPIA~2.WA_ goes fine).

First time you Sync (using ECHO option) you get a proper error message
("Error: File not found"), next times no errror/warning/whatsoever, file is
simply ignored.

This is a pitty, since the tools is great otherwise .

I really would appreciate a fix for this.

Thanks in advance,
Oom Erik.

I also see the same bug in V1.2.075. I concur with the previous reply
indicating that the problem appears to be the tilde "~" in the filename.
Renaming the file (removing the tilde), seemed to correct the problem for me
.... however, seeing my system had numerous files like this, the first
synchronization was very painful and not very "automatic".

This bug is high on my list of problems that need to be corrected. Many of
Microsoft's own programs use the tilde in filenames.

The problem still exists in SyncToy 1.2
I saw a response from George Goley of Microsoft back in September 2005 in
the newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.photos acknowleding the error and
saying they were working on it. I guess that didn't happen or Microsoft told
them to stop development until Vista. :-(

All,

I don't know if it is "kosher" in this forum ... but I ended up using
Karenware.com Replicator. It does almost everything that Synctoy does
(everything that I need), without difficult to debug errors. It is also
significantly faster.
