Synchronisation of folders

My Outlook 2003, regularly shows the message 'Microsoft Office is
synchronising folders'. Whilst it is performing this task, my pc virtualy
comes to a grinding halt! This always happens when emails are being sent or
received, and can also occur automatically and randomly sometimes up to 10
times per day. Each time the task can take up to 4/5 minutes. Does anyone
know if this is normal? If not, is there a way in which I can either stop my
pc performing this task so frequently, or speeding up my pc when it does?

Sync folders is when an auto send/receive is being done, its normal.
With outlook closed you might want to locate and run scanpst.exe (a hidden
file) on your outlook data files
Within outlook check the setting for auto send/receive, it should be no less
than 10 mins.
If you have intergrated AV with outlook you might want to try uninstalling
this and see if the problem continues.
You could also try opening outlook with the safe switch to see if it
continues
Start>Run
outlook.exe /safe
