how do I stop synchronising folders process slowing my PC

Whenever I download my emails (I choose to do it manually) my PC has started
to slow down and I'm told Microsoft is synchronising my folders and although
the process clears itself after a few minutes I don't understand why this has
started to happen now and whether I can (or should) do anything to remedy

What version of Outlook are you using? I assume you're connecting to an
Exchange server? How are you connecting to that Exchange Server? (Local
network? Over the Internet? Other?)

Which mail account type are you using?
Which version of Outlook are you using?

If you are using Outlook 2007, install Service Pack 2 for Office 2007. This
SP drastically increases the responsiveness of Outlook.

Another common cause of the slow down is having a virus scanner integrated
with Outlook. Disable/uninstall this integration and try again.
