Switching from NSW 2005 to NOD32. Questions about killing off the NSW components...

I'M letting the NAV 2005 part of my NSW 2005 lapse, and am giving NOD32 a
try. Just too many phantom slow-downs on my machine, and I'm getting tired
of it.

Questions:

1. If I uninstall NSW outright, then I cannot use ghost, right?
2. Is there a way to just uninstall the NAV component?
3. (!!!!) Will just stopping the NAV part give me my bandwidth back, or are
there more bodies buried within NSW. There are a *lot* of processes
involved here. Far too many if you ask me.

Made the same change myself a few months back, on two different
machines, with no problems (though in my case, it was the SpeedDisk
and WinDoctor components I wanted to keep). You didn't state your OS,
but assuming it's WinXP:

1) Open the Add/Remove Programs control panel and select NSW 2005.
2) Click the Change button to start NSW Setup, then the Modify button.
3) Uncheck the NAV checkbox, then click Next (etc.) to proceed with
the modification (i.e. NAV uninstallation).
4) Restart Windows, then run WinDoctor, and if it finds any registry
problems that have Symantec or NAV in the name (use Show Details and
Let Me Choose...), then *delete* those entries.
5) Reboot again before installing Nod32.

Again, this worked just fine for me, but of course your milage may
vary depending on what other NSW components you use, whether you
installed NSW 2005 from scratch or as an upgrade, your OS version and
SP level, etc.

I recently had to do something very similar with NIS2005 and Ghost.
In the end I had to download SymNRT from the Norton site to completely
remove all Norton software.
Then I reinstalled Ghost and Kaspersky and all was OK.
Without the removal tool from Norton I was stuffed!

I think you can. Ghost is a separate program anyway and only
appears to be part of NSW because it shows up in the cp. I
installed Ghost separately and it slipped itself right into the
SW cp. Which was good; one more tray icon I didn't have to have
turned on since NSW opened the same control panel.
Worst case, to get it working as you wish, you might have to
uninstall and reinstall with Custom Settings to keep the stuff
you don't want from being installed.

2. Is there a way to just uninstall the NAV component?

I'm not sure, but see my comment above; I know it'll work that
way. In mine there is a there's a way to change it, but not sure
of 05 version.

Probably will make a noticeable difference if the slowdown is
machine related, and especially if you had emails being scanned
and the heuristics turned on.
If you're looking to keep SW and some of its other features,
try just going into the cp and turning most of them off
(unclicking them in Options). You don't much need a lot of the
optional stuff turned on in any way, esp if you're switching av.
Be sure to kill the background defrag, too. ON a slower machine,
it and System Doctor grab a lot of cpu cycles.
If you're willing to put in the time & effort, about
everything in SW can be replicated with separate, mostly free
apps. It might take something like TWEAKUI to replace the
Optimizer, but that's free, too. Personally I like it all
together as it is in Norton, but at the rate their prices are
going up and their problems are multiplying, even I might be
having second thoughts. IMO they're losing sight of their real
goals there.

Hmmmm..... I wonder if it is the same with NSW as it was with NIS in your
case.

The problem I have is this: I just don't know what is sucking down all the
bandwidth. Ghost seems to have some processes that need to stay
running....don't know what they do. Furthermore, I'm afraid that just
uninstalling NAV is going to leave 90% of the dreck in there because NSW is
an umbrella of things that seem to want to work together. Hopefully they
work just fine alone. However...

Does the NSW CD allow me to install Ghost as a stand-alone app? Or do I
have to get the mother-ship of symantic control panel and 4,000 helper
processes?
