svchost.exe taking all resources at computer start up.

The strange thing about such thing is that IT always happens on all my os
installations. I have tried XP Home XP Pro, and I still get the svchost.exe
with user name SYSTEM taking all the resources. I don't think it is a virus
because I have re-installed the OS's multiple times by now. I am not sure
also if it has to do with the programs I install on my pc or the Internet
Security engine on my pc.

Any suggestions? This svchost.exe with username SYSTEM is the one that
manages the audio and video devices. If I force it close, I have no sound
and visual effects are gone.

Thank you.

I think that you will find that the svchost.exe in question also manages
Automatic Updates, ....
If the command is svchost.exe -k netsvcs. There is a whole list of
svchost.exe -k netsvcs controlled services.

This usually happens when Automatic Updates is toast and needs to be
re-initialized on your system. This involves cleaning out folders,
re-registering files, deleting some files, ....

There are many posts here describing this as well as on Google.

Go to the Windows Update newsgroup, you will find heaps of advice. You have a
problem with Windows Automatic Update--turn it off and then get the hotfix
suggested by Roman S.

Thank you brad for redirecting me to the Windows Update Discussion group. It
turns out that Microsoft Update was the one to blame for my svchost.exe
problems.

I just went back to Windows Update until Microsoft posts a solution for this
problem.

Thank you again for all of your help.
