svchost.exe - running cpu 90-100%

E

Eco

Recently, part of users report their wks super slow when they turned on
computer when started work. The svchost.exe fully occupied cpu 100% after
checked. But I can't check any virus / spyware or any adnormal program
running after unplug the network cable.

Since the wks was running slow as hang and svchost.exe fully used cpu 100%,
I can't fix it asap for the users. And seems no read/write on harddisk as
the harddisk light wouldn't blink. Lastly, I let it run and it returned to
normal after almost half an hour. Svchost.exe stopped to use cpu again and
system idle used 9x% And then the windows update icon message appeared at
the right hand side corner. The other PC has the same issue too.

These wks are all using old PIII cpu with 256M Memory and installed with
win2000 OS. And these PCs are turn on windows update automatically too. I
would like to ask if the "svchost.exe w/ 100% cpu" related to windows
update. Does windows update has bug? Now I turn off all windows update for
the slow wks. Actually How should I quickly fix this problem for the user?
Any advise? Thanks much!

Hmmmm, looks like some of my old PCs have the same exact problem...
old P2s 400 Mhz with 256 MB RAM, Svchostg going 100% half an hour and
Automatic Updates presenting one or more updates that should already
be installed...

I solved by manually unchecking the updates and going on MS Update
website, but this seems not to work for everyone (see prior thread
"Weird problem" on this newsgroup - I still have to check for other
solutions)
