We have tried many things to correct the svchost.exe error. Nothing seems to
work.

1) upgrading flash
2) upgrading java
3) upgrading IE and windows to service pack 3
4) Configuring autoupdates/disabling - and those related to services.msc

It is happening on both my laptops.

What could it possible be.

There is an updates svchost.exe (post XP SP3, build 5.1.2600.5689)
that is available by getting the patch from this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897571

I know it says Windows Server 2003, trust me, there's one for XP in
the same "View and request hotfix downloads" link.

Give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

This website has some ideas on how to fix the problem.http://www.pchell.com/support/svchosterror.shtml

Sounds to me like your notebook is ruuning a service that conflicts
with another svhost process. Since this is a generic name for host
services it will be difficult to isolate. I suggest you start by
removing services that use the svchost process. You will find several
of these processes running under the task manager. If you can't find
the associated process then perhaps it's something you installed. Try
using hijackThis to remove processes until you find the infected/
affect one. Download and execute HiJack This! (HJT)
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe This worked
for me.
